HUDSON MAXIM
began his
career in armaments and explosives in his brother Hiram's gun factory in New England
. In 1888, he began
developing new explosives
and by 1890. Maxim invented a
new smokeless powder
. He helped his
brother found a dynamite and powder factory in New Jersey
that year: the following year, they parted company. In 1892, he began his own munitions factory in New Jersey, the heart of the United States' manufacturing at that time, where he
developed a smokeless cannon powder
. Maxim sold his company to E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company in 1897: however, he remained as a consulting engineer.
Later accomplishments include shock resistant torpedoes, delayed-action fuses and a propulsion substance fro torpedoes. These inventions greatly aided the Allied effort in World War I.
Machine guns manufactured by his brother changed the weaponry of warfare for all time. Former Unitarian Minister
THOMAS WENTWORTH HIGGINSON
was a
colonel in the first Negro regiment in the Union Army from 1862-1864
. He
wrote about his experiences in
Army Life in a Black Regiment
(1870). Also an advocate of women's rights, in 1855 Reverend Higginson presided over the marriage of Henry B. Blackwell and suffragist Lucy Stone. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.

If any substantial defect not described in the item listing is found by the purchaser, the item(s) must be returned within 3 days of receipt. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express & PayPal. PayPal customers must have a confirmed address on file with PayPal. Customers must provide a daytime telephone number to be used in case of any shipping difficulties.

Shipping
- We ship via FedEx and USPS. Shipping charges are calculated at time of payment and are dependent on the number of items purchased and the destination shipping address.
