    Description

Beautiful covered sauce/gravy tureen that has exotic, Japanese, motifs that clearly represent the Aesthetic Movement for all things Japanese that washed over England in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.  The underside of the cover/lid is stamped with Registry Numbers (8823) and the dish has some illegible numbers .  Under-plate is stamped MIKADO and has an incised/impressed circle that looks like a rosette and the bottom of the ladle has the same impressed design.
All four pieces have cartouches that depict Japanese hunters and their prey.  Three hunters carrying bows and arrows are astride horses as they search for ducks or large birds.  One of the motifs pictures a bird falling from the sky with an arrow piercing its body.  All four pieces are of the same matching set and carry like motifs.
The handles are outlined and decorated with copper lustre brushwork as seen in many Staffordshire pieces.  The colors are still brilliant.  There is crazing and I detect one teeny-tiny flake on the outside rim of the lid which may be a bubble in the glaze.  There are three very small nicks on the inside rim of the tureen (hidden under the lid) and one on the outside of the rim.
    Tureen/dish measures 9 1/2" by 6 1/2" with lid, and under-plate is 9" by 6 1/2".  The ladle is 6 1/2" long.
This stunning sauce/gravy tureen represents the Victorian Era and their love of the exotic east!  Please see my other auctions for a matching dinner plate and another tureen.
