    . Its creator, Dr. Augustin Thompson, was a Civil War veteran from Union, Maine. He created patent medicines to complement his earnings from his medical practice located in Lowell, Massachusetts. Noticing the popularity of soft drinks being sold at local soda fountains, Dr. Thompson reformulated his medicine and started selling it as a carbonated drink called
    "Moxie"
