MARSHALL HOLLOWAY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/17/1976 - HFSID 71899
    MARSHALL G. HOLLOWAY
    . ALS:
    "Marshall G. Holloway"
    in pencil, 3¼p, 8½x11.
    Jupiter, Florida, 1976 July 17.
To William A. Kulick, Southern High School, Baltimore.
He has headed the first part of his letter:
    "
My Capacity with the Manhattan Project:
    "
    . This part, in full:
"Soon after the belief that an atomic (fission) bomb could be made, it was realized that it might be possible to make a hydrogen (fusion) bomb. As a consequence of this, I, along with several colleagues, spent 11 months at Purdue measuring the tritium-deuterium cross section for fusion [Oct 1943 to Sept 1943].
[Note: Holloway meant to write "Oct 1942"]
That task having been completed, we all moved to Los Alamos which had opened in April of 1943. For about a year I was working on the water boiler which was a small reactor making temporary use of the first enriched uranium (in U235). This work was extended to construction and testing of various 'critical assemblies' of enriched U235 and the determination that the various sub-assemblies of the weapons them selves
    (sic)
were safe to make, store and transport, including any possible accidental situations. This led to my being involved in the detailed design and testing of the nuclear components of both the Hiroshima (gren type) and Nagasaki (implosion type) weapons. One of the latter was assembled and detonated at Trinity (code name for the Alamagordo area).
Following that the final work on the actual weapons was completed and the Holloway family went to a nearby (security cleared) dude ranch for a two week vacation."
    The second part is headed:
    "
My Thoughts of the first Atomic Explosion:
    ".
In this section, he writes, in part:
"First, the explosion was awesome. I was impressed. Second, the thing worked. There is an old expression in the atomic bomb business which is: 'The last ten seconds (before detonation) are the hardest'. What could you have forgotten? Will it perform near what was predicted? Etc...Neither then or after Hiroshima and Nagasaki did I feel any sense of guilt. The US had been a nation fighting for its life and we had made a weapon which brought an earlier end to the conflict.
I still feel no guilt...The hardest part of home was in keeping my mouth shut. My wife did not learn of what Los Alamos was all about until President Truman's announcement following the Hiroshima drop...."
Dr. Marshall G. Holloway was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1967 for the "Design, construction, and testing of nuclear weapons". He died in 1991. Lightly creased at upper right blank corner of second page. Fine condition.
