    Transferware Tea Set
    PUNCH & JUDY
Charles Allerton & Sons ~ Staffordshire England c18
    95
    This is a stunning child's
    partial
transfer printed toy tea set, circa 1895. Originally part of a complete children's miniature tea se
    rvice
    ,
    with pear-shaped serving
    pieces. The color is a
    pastel country blue
    .
    The tea set includes:
Teapot stands about 5-1/2 inches tall (
    flake on side of
    spout)
Creamer or milk just stands about 3-1/2 inches tall
Waste bowl, 2-1/2 inches tall, 4 inches across top rim
(flakes and stilt marks on foot)
    Cup & Saucer
    (
    chip on edge of cup
    )
The set features the fabulous characters from the Punchinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Mr Punch, Judy and Ragbaby, along with a fanciful pipe-smoking frog. These fanciful characters are surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. The handles and lids have a geometrical border trim that complements the central image.
The pattern name is "Punch". It was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The set is marked with the Allerton mark (dating to 1895-1905) and the pattern name.
    The set is in overall
    very good
condition with only the minor damage described above.
The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect these sets...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, and there is a firing separation inside the teapot’s spout, stilt marks, runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm.
Antique English transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after, and is getting harder to find. This amusing tea set will make a wonderful addition to your collection of children's dishes or any collection of Punch and Judy, jester, puppetry or magical memorabilia.
